About Us;AREA, the American Re-EDucation Association, established in 1982, helps child development and intervention professionals in their work with troubled and troubling children & youth and their families. AREA members are people just like you, dedicated to working with children who have emotional and/or behavioral problems, creating collaborative and supportive relationships with their families, and contributing to the development of a healthier, more effective ecology for each of them.

Through AREA, every member of an agency's staff becomes attuned to the Re-ED Principles and practices, enabling them to function as an integral part of a unified team. Social workers, psychologists, educators, therapists and developmental specialists learn to work together in a coordinated, effective way. And, when an entire staff shares the Re-ED philosophy, a foundation of learning and growth is created. This benefits the troubled child and his or her family because a consistent, strength-based, principle-driven message and approach is a mainstay of success.

Staff members also benefit when they are unified in both philosophy and practice.  Isolation, hopelessness and exhaustion can drain the most talented and dedicated professionals. Through AREA, members can depend on a true community of caring, passionate colleagues that share, support, energize and celebrate.

Lisa Shepard has been hired as the administrator of the American Re-EDucation Association after a national search.  Lisa was welcomed by the AREA Board during the board meeting in February in Nashville.  Lisa brings 30 years of varied experience in services to children and families to her new position.  She has served in direct care, supervision and executive management capacities in Re-ED organizations in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.  While serving as administrator of AREA, Lisa will also continue to serve as an associate trainer/consultant with Reclaiming Youth International.

Lisa replaces Mark Freado, who served as executive director of AREA since 1996 and resigned in December 2008.

  • The new Re-ED book, Helping Troubled and Troubling Children: Continuing Evidence for the Re-ED Approach is NOW AVAILABLE.  The book has contributions from dozens of Re-ED authors. Drs. Mary Lynn and Robert Cantrell were dedicated to this important Re-ED project for several years. Their time and efforts were encouraged and supported through the commitment and generosity of Frank Fecser, Executive Director of the Positive Education Program (PEP). We are very grateful.
